Integrated circuits are used in virtually all electronic equipment today and have revolutionized the world of electronics. Techniques such as branch prediction and speculative execution are used to lessen these branch penalties. During the 1960s, computer processors were constructed out of small and medium-scale ICs each containing from tens to a few hundred transistors. The semiconductor material used in devices is doped under highly controlled conditions in a fabrication facility, or fab, to precisely control the location and concentration of p- and n-type dopants.
