In 1986, HP released its first system with a PA-RISC CPU. Existing integer registers are extended as are all related data pathways, but, as was the case with IA-32, both floating point and vector units had been operating at or above 64 bits for several years. The large number of discrete logic gates used more electrical powerXand therefore, produced more heatXthan a more integrated design with fewer ICs.
