Affordable 8-bit microprocessors with 16-bit addressing also led to the first general-purpose microcomputers from the mid-1970s on. Although several companies each produce over a billion individually packaged (known as discrete) transistors every year, the vast majority of transistors now produced are in integrated circuits (often shortened to IC, microchips or simply chips), along with diodes, resistors, capacitors and other electronic components, to produce complete electronic circuits. In 1986, HP released its first system with a PA-RISC CPU. Both versions can run 32-bit legacy applications without any performance penalty as well as new 64-bit software. This effect is called electroluminescence and the color of the light (corresponding to the energy of the photon) is determined by the energy gap of the semiconductor. Such a model is processed by a synthesis program, only if it is part of the logic design. Transistorized mechatronic circuits have replaced electromechanical devices in controlling appliances and machinery.
